How to do the military press

The military press is a great basic compound exercise to do.  It works not only deltoids but triceps as well, and can be done in both sitting and standing positions.  No matter which position you choose, keep your back erect, abdominals tight, and head in neutral position.  This exercise can be done either standing or sitting and with either dumbbells or a barbell.  Standing with a barbell is the preferred method though.

Here is how you would perform this exercise.

1.  Just like the behind the neck press except with the weight in front of your head.  When using a barbell it can rest on your upper chest.

2.  Lift the weight directly above your head without locking your arms into the straight position.  Then lower the weight back down to your chest slowly.

Don'ts

-Arch your back.

-Lock your arms at the top of position.

-Allow barbell to jerk or bounce off the top of your chest.

Do's

-Keep your abs tight.

-Keep your back erect, head and neck straight.

-Pay strict attention to your form.
