How to do leg presses

The leg press machine is a favorites in gyms only because you can safely work both legs at the same time even while using a lot of weight.  However, don't add more weight than you can safely control for 10 to 12 repetitions.

Here is how you would perform this exercise.

1.  Position yourself on the machine, and place your feet on the sled approximately shoulder width apart.

2.  Point your toes outward slightly.

3.  Grasp the handles that are on either side of the seat.

4.  Disengage the brake, and slowly lower the sled as far as you can without your lower back coming up off the sled.

5.  Pause for a count of two and slowly return to the starting position.

Don'ts

-Lockout or snap your knees at the end of the movement.

-Arch your back.

-Allow your buttocks to lift off the seat.

Do's

-Keep your abdominals tight.

-Bear weight on the midfoot to heel portion of your feet, not the toes.
